Our value as a generation should not be measured by the amount of time we have lived on this planet. Our value comes from the fact that we were born into an era that was both the most chaotic, yet optimistic period in the 20th century – and we survived.
We have spent our entire lives weathering a series of social upheavals beyond what the world has ever experienced. We have gained insight in the moment and had the benefit of hind-sight to put things in greater perspective. It is not that we have lived for a long time – it is that we have experienced a unique era in the American story. This site is designed to demonstrate the expansive variety of accomplishments our generation achieved. Whether in music, film, art, literature or science – Boomers have made the world a better place for all generations that came before us and will come after us. But there is one more battle we have to shoulder. We still have to fight for equality in society and in the workplace. As a collective we include every other category of diversity – BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and those who are differently-abled. All of those categories deserve full inclusion and equity in all aspects of life – and at all ages in their lives. But so do those of us who only fit into the category of age. Age discrimination is still socially acceptable. The problem is compounded and perpetuated by Hollywood entertainment content. Yet, the true villain in this story is Madison Avenue. We need to change the stories that are being told about us. That will only happen if we are given a seat at the table. This site is a work in progress. As more material is loaded, the story will grow. I sincerely hope you will make it a habit to drop by and see our progress. |
